According to data from the Ministry of Education and Training, the 2022-2023 school year was marked with a steady return to post-covid schooling, with positive results.
There were 15,334 preschools serving children in the 3-6 age groups in Vietnam and a significantly higher number of day care groups and kindergartens (kindergartens with enrolment of under 70 children are not called “preschools”). Together they provide Early Childhood Education for almost 5.2 million Vietnamese children in the under-6 age group; accounting for 70.4% of all children in the under-6 age group.
During the 2022-2023 school year, among these 15,334 preschools, there were 659 more preschools that qualified to meet National Standards, increasing the rate of preschools meeting standards to 56.9% – an increase of 2.3% compared to the previous school year.
However, the shortage of preschool teachers was a lingering concern.
The Ministry of Education and Training and provincial Department of Education and Training continues to invest intensively in preschool teachers’ professional development. The rate of preschool teachers meeting training standards or higher according to the 2019 Education Law in the 2022-2023 school year was 87.3% (an increase of 10.6%), among them 65.1% exceeding the standards. This is an increase of 7.2% compared to the previous school year) and is a solid basis for quality early childhood education for all children in Vietnam.
